A previous owner had enclosed the original porch of this home, creating a small sunroom off the living and kitchen areas. Whilst windows had been added at the time, it had made the kitchen and living areas dark and reduced air flow.

The current owner wanted to open up the home to the pool, connecting the kitchen and living spaces, whilst creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors.

The sunroom was removed and the new deck was built over the existing, raised porch slab and extended to the house line. A glass panel fence and balustrade was designed to ensure that the view from the inside and from the deck were not compromised. The pitched pergola was chosen as it was in keeping with the style of the house and also to ensure as much light and air flow were captured through the home. The pergola was insulated so as not add to the internal heat load.

With large stacking doors on both sides, the addition of the deck and pergola has opened up this home to the pool area, visually extending the footprint. With small, dark disconnected spaces before, the family now spends most of their time with the doors open enjoying the deck and pool throughout the year.
